Blogging for Yourself, the User and the Search Engine – a 2008 resolution
As you may or may not know, I am a big believer in blogging. It is a valuable way of
1)expressing your personality,
2)creating a connection with your users, and
3)getting valuable SE ranking.
The question is which one comes first? You might think this is a trivial question. It’s not. When I started blogging on About Results Marketing, I had merely bought a cool expiring domain for something I had wanted to do in the future – consulting in SEO, SEM and online marketing.
I also quickly learnt that I had a way of expression through writing and insight that was often missed, even though there are many people posting their opinions online. So even though I was working for a company and had no time to do consulting, I still kept writing.
About four months ago I started working with a local company that gave me more time to myself, and opened up more time for me to generate consulting leads. So I started to focus more on the SEO for the website.
However, I kept the format I did previously – which was to take the latest news in online marketing, a conversation that I (actually) had something intelligent to comment on and take part of the conversation to my blog.
While this served a bit to help me get some traffic to my site, and some links in, it wasn’t targeted to my target audience – (local) business owners who want to start generating leads and sales using the internet. It did however work for SEO, as all of the content was on the industry, and I had created a number of links in that were targeted towards the keywords I wanted to rank for.
Bottom line, this blog has scored well for two out of the three criteria – expressing my personality, and getting SEO, however, it’s not hitting my target audience, small business owners not in the search engine marketing industry.
For the next year, while I will be focusing on expressing my opinion on the happenings in the search marketing industry, I will also be trying to help out small business owners with SEO and PPC advice a little more.
I hope that you also take a little lesson, and remember to focus on your target audiences needs, and not only on what you want said.
Happy New Year!
