MySpace Marketing Still Work? Getting a “Guru’s” Attention…

By Los Angeles Internet Marketing • October 16th, 2007

Thanks for Dropping By! I'd love to learn more about you, so why don't you join my MyBlogLog Community and say "Hi"?

1) Does MySpace Marketing Still work?

About six month ago, I went to my first - and currently only, “Internet Marketing” seminar. I met this amazing twelfth grade high school kid that was making a hell of a lot more than I was using just myspace marketing.

However, he mentioned that he was starting to research other topics, as he felt that the myspace legality issues were precarious. If they start prohibiting certain messaging etc, it would negatively affect the ability to do (affiliate) marketing on myspace. (Obviously, bands aren’t going to have a problem promoting themselves).

However, I just got referred over by Ben Mack (I’ll explain this link in Part 2), to contact Theo Baskind, the author behind The MySpace Ace.

For those of you who don’t know who Ben Mack is, he is the author of Think Two Products Ahead, a mind bending mix of the direct marketing world and the branding world. One of the few books that I actually reread. I take Ben’s Recommendation very seriously.

My induction - Myspace is really worth pursuing. In fact, it is a part of the whole “Social Media Optimization” skillset that I have never really picked up. Heck, I just picked up a Myspace account a year and a half ago -and as you can see, I don’t do much with it. I picked up a facebook like a year ago on the strong urging of some friends - and still have never used it.

2) Getting a Guru’s Attention… I have a little experiment that I’m kind of “icky” about talking about - or making too obvious, because then it looses it’s potency. But since I wouldn’t have the guts to use it much anyway, I may as well allow you to abuse it until it loses it’s effectiveness.

It’s really a stream taken of off the “blog on a hot topic and ride the traffic wave” strategy some bloggers use.

Many People use Google Alerts to alert them when something of interest comes up. It could be an industry keyword, or their own name to monitor the conversations about them.

All you have to do is create a blog post about that person - or an article they recently wrote. Chances are, you will get in their Google Alerts. I also post a link to my “Comment post”, on the commenters original blog.

(I setup Google alerts with the “my own name” trick - and sadly enough it was turning up professors in In indiana, so I gave up. Someone smooth my ego… please!)

Jeff Quipp, is one example of where I got the chance to talk to Jeff Quipp. Some results… Google - number 10,

Yahoo - Number 2 through my digg site, 8 on regular

Google Blog Search - Number 2 and 4.

That Kind of sums it up. That’s why I put that link to Ben Mack leading to a YouTube Search for him. Ben has this knack for doing alot of these tricks (that’s how he got his amazon book to be a bestseller), and although I have no clue why, Ben has been sending links to youtube videos of his through a Youtube Search For His Name.

He has to be doing some type of “influence game”. And since I want him to mentor me, I’m trying to get on his Google Alerts as well - just for the heck of it. (Ben, do you remember me?)

The other person I’m trying to get ahold of is Theo Baskind. Ben gave me Theo’s personal email address. Unfortunately, my computer crashed, and the notepad file that held his email address is gone. So, I’m testing this little technique out, and seeing if I could get Theo’s Baskind’s attention by becoming number one on Google.

Theo - if you read this, do me a favor, and email me at: David at About Results Marketing Dot Com…

Everyone else - if you appreciated the sneaky little way to get the attention of people that are just a bit ahead of you on the game. Do me a favor, and help me get to number one on Google for Theo Baskind.
